Evan BeVier: Invent@NMU’s Mechanical Engineer Technologist

By Sarah Gimpl

Meet Evan BeVier

One of Invent at NMU’s recent graduates is Evan BeVier, an incredibly talented Mechanical Engineer Technologist. Evan began working at Invent in 2021 and has brought integral skills to our team with product design, 3D printing, client collaboration, and more. His continuous dedication to his craft is something our Invent@NMU team will continuously strive for.

Evan just graduated from Northern Michigan University this December with a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering. Although we’re sad to see him go, we’re thrilled to see the amazing things he will accomplish in his future endeavors! We asked Evan about his experience at Invent@NMU, inspirations, and words of wisdom for future Mechanical Engineer Technologists. Keep reading to learn more about him!

How did your interest in mechanical engineering technology begin?

“I found I had a knack for engineering during middle school in a class called tech-ed. This class focused on designing and building projects intended to solve problems. I quickly learned that visualizing solutions in my head was a strength that I enjoyed, which eventually led me to engineering.”

How do you get inspiration for projects?

“I find excitement in both new, innovative ideas and existing ones. Innovators that have come before me inspire me to apply that same ‘thinking outside the box’ mindset to my projects.”

What are some important life skills you’ve learned while working at Invent?

“Beyond applying the skills I’ve learned in the classroom to real-life applications, Invent@NMU has shown me how to grow ‘paper napkin’ ideas into a potential business venture. My confidence in the workplace has grown drastically, so much so that I feel the potential to bring my own product ideas into reality.”

Has Invent @ NMU helped you prepare for life after graduation?

“Yes, I feel confident in my abilities to function in an industry job. I feel like I have developed an edge that sets me apart from my peers in the classroom.”

What’s your best advice for people seeking work-life balance?

“I consider myself someone who struggles to find this balance. Even if my job offers a flexible schedule, I find myself going home to work on personal projects. But at the very end of the day, if I get a movie in and a good night’s sleep, I get my recharge in and I’m ready to do it all again!”

Out of all of your designs, which has been the most fun to create?

“My first project, ‘PauseMe’ was the most fun to create. This project essentially is a small computer accessory to be used in combination with a Zoom call on the user’s computer using Bluetooth. The product has 2 buttons, 1 that mutes/unmutes the audio and 1 that turns the video on and off during the call. Being my first project, I learned an incredible amount about the order of operations required to bring a product idea to market.”

Leaving The Nest

The growth Evan has shown during his time at Invent has never gone unnoticed. We are so grateful for all of his insight, teamwork, and passion in and out of the office. As Evan enters post-graduate life, our team at Invent@NMU wants to highlight the irreplaceable mark he has left here. Thank you for all you have done, Evan!
