The Student Experience

Invent@NMU is powered by a dedicated team of Northern Michigan University students committed to bringing visionary projects to life. Our program provides a hands-on, real-world experience in a collaborative environment  where students can develop their skills in design, engineering, business, and marketing. By working on client projects, students gain valuable experience in problem-solving, project management, and teamwork while making a difference in our community. 

The student experience at Invent@NMU is enriched by mentorship from Innovate Marquette (IMQT) professionals, flexible working hours that accommodate class schedules, and a hybrid work model that blends remote and in-office tasks. Students have access to state-of-the-art equipment in the Protolab and engage in activities that enhance their resumes and portfolios. Additionally, working at Invent@NMU offers opportunities to attend community events, represent the organization as brand ambassadors, and interact with a diverse range of clients.

As a Marketing Assistant at Invent@NMU, you will help develop and execute marketing strategies to promote our programs and services. You'll assist with creating content, managing social media accounts, and conducting market research to understand our audience better. This role involves working closely with the marketing team to ensure that our messaging is consistent and effective.

Human-Centered Designer's (HCD) at Invent@NMU focus on creating solutions that address users' needs and challenges. HCD's are involved in all stages of the design process, from identifying problems and setting goals to sketching concepts and creating detailed CAD models. HCD's collaborate with clients and team members to ensure that designs are practical and user-friendly. Work as a HCD directly impacts the development of innovative products and services.

This role requires excellent communication and organizational skills, as you'll help coordinate meetings, and assist with any questions potential clients may have.

Collaboration with other team members is important to ensure cohesive and impactful design work.

Client Onboarding Guide

This role fields inquiries, conducts Quick Explores, and guides clients through our onboarding process. Key responsibilities include managing calendars and appointments, researching product/business ideas, providing effective and consistent customer service, maintaining accurate records, creating professional presentations, data entry, and effectively communicating with the staff team and client to meet expectations.
