Human-Centered Designer

Memorable Experiences

Eric describes his time at Invent@NMU as an invaluable part of his college experience—one he couldn’t imagine doing without. From collaborating with teams of students and professionals to learning how to take a concept from a client’s idea to a mass-produced product, the hands-on learning was unmatched. One of his most memorable experiences was launching his first product while working at Invent@NMU. Alongside teammates Evan Bevier and Ryan Kik, Eric helped develop Pause-Me—a standalone electronic device that lets users control their Zoom microphone and camera with the push of a button. While the concept was relatively simple, perfecting it took time. Over the course of a month, the team created initial sketches, developed 3D-printed prototypes, and worked closely with an overseas manufacturer and design team. From the first client meeting to mass production, the entire process was completed in just 60 days. For Eric, this achievement was unforgettable—not just because of the technical accomplishment, but because of the impact. The product’s success allowed the client to leave her job and run her business full-time. “Knowing that something we helped create could change someone’s life—that’s an indescribable feeling,” Eric shares. For him, the work being done at Innovate Marquette and Invent@NMU goes far beyond product development. It’s about empowering people, solving real problems, and making a difference—and he’s incredibly grateful to have played a part in that mission.

Advice to Current NMU Students

Eric encourages incoming NMU students—especially those passionate about entrepreneurship and product development—to fully immerse themselves in every opportunity that comes their way. He highlights programs like Invent@NMU as offering invaluable, real-world experience that goes far beyond the classroom. Through hands-on work on diverse projects, collaboration with talented peers, and exposure to the full process of bringing an idea to life, students gain a deep understanding of what it truly takes to develop a product. “Don’t be afraid to dive into the unknown,” Eric advises. “Even if it feels intimidating at first, the skills you build—teamwork, problem-solving, and product development—are essential for any career path.” His experience at Invent@NMU showed him that students have the power to make a meaningful impact, whether by helping a client launch a successful product or creating something with the potential to change lives. Eric’s advice: embrace every challenge, learn from every experience, and never underestimate the value of hard work and collaboration. The opportunities at NMU are what you make of them—so take full advantage and let your creativity lead the way.
