The Caregiver Incentive Project (CIP)

A common trait found in entrepreneurs, innovators, and trailblazers alike is problem solving through critical thinking. Since Eric Paad, Caregiver Incentive Project founder and President, is all three he is no different. Eric has a desire for progress versus perfection – a well-targeted effort rather than sitting on your hands and giving up because “it’s just the way it is”. Eric, who spends most of his time not only as a father, but as a caregiver to his daughter, has spent many nights worrying about finding quality care for her. During his search for caregivers he had a realization. He thought if he was struggling to find a caregiver for his own family, the entire caregiving industry must be looking as well, and he was right. From this moment on, he decided it was time to make a change.

What is the CIP?

The Caregiver Incentive Project (CIP), is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity based in Marquette, Mich., that aims to inform, train and incentivize individuals to become exceptional caregivers. The CIP was inspired by Paad’s daughter, Dorothy, who has cerebral palsy and needs caregivers to live an independent adult life. The Caregiver Incentive Project was born out of the Paad family’s real life experience and the desire to have a productive voice in an unproductive conversation. Eric and his wife still provide 70% of the care that Dorothy needs from day-to-day, but having good caregivers or what Dorothy refers to as “angels” makes the difference between 70% and 100% of care.

Kaylee Quertermus, CIP’s Director of Communications and Public Relations, is Eric’s right-hand woman in his caregiving crusade. Not only does she play a crucial role in CIP’s development, but Kaylee’s also a Caregiver and best friend to Dorothy. When thinking of all that a caregiver should be, Kaylee should come to mind. Her undying love and passion for her work is what embodies the essence of a caregiver. It isn’t just a job for her – she truly cares about the positive impact she’s making not only in Dorothy’s life, but in the entire community.

"Caregivers are the people that take care of the elderly, disabled, and medically fragile. They’re the ones that allow us to live with decency and dignity in our homes” - Eric Paad, Founder and President of the Caregiver Incentive Project.

Eric hopes to one day go out of business. His objective for the Caregiver Incentive Project is one you wouldn’t expect from a business owner. Eric hopes to make such a profound impact that he, and all of the Caregiver Incentive Project, becomes obsolete. However, with such a long road ahead and more work to be done around every corner, the CIP will be in business for years to come.

One way Eric plans to solve the caregiving issue is by making the CIP’s mission exportable. Eric has already seen a demand for this exportable CIP product when he receives messages from all over Michigan. Even across the country in states like Oregon and Alaska people are calling out to the Caregiver Incentive Project. Eric refers to a conversation with a caregiving company in Oregon, “When you fix it over there, come fix it here!

The Caregiver Incentive Project and Invent@NMU

During a campus visit to Northern Michigan University in 2016, Eric noticed a display showcasing the services provided by Invent@NMU. Now that he had an understanding of the services Invent@NMU specializes in, it was an easy decision to reach out to Invent in 2018 when he had the idea of starting a non-profit to incentivize a new standard of caregiving in the Upper Peninsula.

After his initial contact, Eric and the Invent student team quickly got to work. To keep the ball rolling, the team worked with Eric directly even before he received the 501(c)(3). When he made the decision to go public and launch his idea, Invent continued to guide him down the right path. Eric remembers the passion of the team and their genuine interest in his idea.

“The most memorable was the energy and enthusiasm and the creativity of the people that were there…they would believe in what I was saying, and gather around and listen,” Eric recalled. “We believe in your idea and we want to help you launch it… and they did.”

Supporting the CIP's Mission

The Caregiver Incentive Project welcomes support in a variety of different forms.

Through contributions, the CIP is raising money for scholarships, incentives and training programs. 100% of donations go to putting an end to the national shortage of quality caregivers in your area.

Becoming a caregiver can be one of the most rewarding experiences and occupations a person can have. Through the Caregiver Incentive Project you can start your caregiving journey.

The Caregiver Incentive Project can always benefit from the help of the community by volunteering your time and helping spread the word about the CIP’s cause.
